Oscar Maldonado, 72, of Odessa, passed away on Sunday December 5, 2021, in Odessa.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Graveside Services will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, December 9, 2021, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Reverend Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating.
Oscar was born in El Paso to Arcardio Maldonado and Guadalupe Almanza on March 12, 1949. He went to school at Austin High in El Paso and graduated from there in 1967. He joined the Army in May of 1968 and proudly served in Vietnam. He received several awards and was a sharpshooter in the Army. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army on April 22, 1971. He always said that was his greatest accomplishment, to proudly serve the US Army.
He married the love of his life, Sue Maldonado on September 15, 1971, in El Paso, Texas. They soon moved to Odessa and welcomed their first born. They made a loving home here in Odessa and later welcomed two more sons. He attended Odessa College and obtained many years of college education, as he was always eager to learn and expand his knowledge and loved meeting new people.
He held many jobs in his lifetime and was considered a “jack of all trades” and had mastered many. He started employment with the City of Odessa, Solid Waste Department, in 1988 as a shop welder. Through hard work and dedication, he worked his way up to Super Intendent of Solid Waste for the City of Odessa and held that title until his retirement in 2018, after 29 years of service. In retirement, he enjoyed building, landscaping, and masonry as well as spending time with his grandkids. He loved to be outdoors and always had a project lined up to do and was not shy about recruiting his grandsons to assist. Even if it was 107 degrees and they were on top of a metal roof in the middle of summertime in West Texas.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Maria and Manuel Maldonado, and maternal grandparents Jose and Appolonia Almanza; mother, Guadalupe Almanza; father, Arcardio Maldonado; granddaughter, Amber Maldonado; and grandson, Ashton Maldonado, as well as several other precious family members.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sue Maldonado; his sons, Billy and wife Gypsy Maldonado, Jamie and wife Nicole Maldonado, Paul and wife Nikki Maldonado; 3 sisters, Perla Maldonado, Blanca Ceniceros, and Elizabeth Maldonado; grandchildren, Brynn Maldonado, Logan Maldonado, Camron Maldonado, Aaron Maldonado, Landon Maldonado, Blayke Maldonado, Nathan Maldonado, and Morgan Maldonado; and great granddaughter, Bella Nieto. He also had several cousins whom he loved dearly, he really loved picking on his younger cousin Arturo Mares, as they grew up together and spent many a days and years playing and growing up together.
Pallbearers will be all his grandsons, Logan Maldonado, Camron Maldonado, Aaron Maldonado, Landon Maldonado, Blayke Maldonado, and Nathan Maldonado.
