Paul D. Jones passed away on January 4, 2013, at the Hospice House in Odessa at the age of 88. He was born on July 22, 1924, in Oxford, Nebraska, to Bonnie and Carney Jones.
After graduating from high school in Oxford, Paul began doing pipeline work in Kansas. In 1943 he joined the U.S. Army. In 1944 he crossed the Atlantic and served for a short period in England and France and then served in the first group of infantrymen to enter Germany during World War II. He stayed in Germany from December to May of 1944 and helped clean out the Ruhr Pocket. After the war ended, he was transferred into the Army of Occupation in Germany from May until December of 1945.
After his discharge from the Army, he returned to Nebraska and resumed doing pipeline work. He went to work for McVean Barlow Pipeline Construction Company in 1946 as a sideboom operator and worked his way up the ranks serving as a project superintendent for many years. He worked for them for approximately 40 years and worked all over the country. After that he did contract pipeline inspection for El Paso Natural Gas and Northern Natural. He was highly respected in the pipeline industry by both his employers and coemployees alike.
Paul and Arva Luke , who was also from Oxford, Nebraska, were married in 1947 in Lovington, New Mexico, and then came to Odessa to work. They raised four children in Odessa and were married until her death in 1999. In 1976 they moved from town to Gardendale. Being from Nebraska, he was always a farmer at heart. He loved being on his tractor, whether it be plowing under the pecan trees, preparing the big garden he planted every year, or, most importantly, taking all the grandkids on tractor rides to the grocery store for candy. He used to enjoy trying to beat the girls, Arva, Katherine and Debra, in pinochle at the Friday night games. In more recent years, he looked forward to working the daily Word Jumble with Marguerite during their nightly phone conversations. He also enjoyed going fishing at Lake Amistad.
Paul is survived by his four children, daughter Katherine and husband Joe Mac Sanders of Odessa son Dale Jones and wife Debra of Odessa daughter Glenda and husband Jerry Harris of Gardendale and son Calvin Jones of Austin. He is survived by six grandchildren, Stephanie and husband Jay Moran of Odessa Cristi and husband Irvin Simmons of Odessa Mac Sanders of Odessa Aimee and husband Joel Sales of Lubbock James Chastain and wife Denise of Odessa and Luke Jones of Searcy, Arkansas 12 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sisterinlaw, Sharon Jones, of Oxford, Nebraska, several nieces and nephews, and his good friend, Marguerite Longsine, also of Oxford.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bonnie and Carney Jones his wife, Arva Jones three sisters, Hazel Jones, Helen Lunberry, and Virginia Sampson his brother, Jinks Jones and his grandson, Matthew Jones.
A family visitation will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens on Sunday, January 6, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 7, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. at Sunset with Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset.
Pallbearers will be Mac Sanders, James Chastain, Luke Jones, Jay Moran, Irvin Simmons, and Joel Sales.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of StarCare Hospice, particularly Ale, Sabrina, and Jennifer, and to his day nurses, Sam and Helen, and his night nurse Helen from Janies Gentle Touch and to the staff of the Hospice House for their professional and compassionate support to both Paul and his family during this time.
