Paul was born in Tarrant City, Alabama, to Annie and Paul E. Lucas Sr. on January 13, 1940. He was raised in Lubbock, TX and graduated from Lubbock High School in 1958. In 1961, he enlisted in the Army and served for 2 years. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, an expert Carbine award and an expert Rifle award. He was honorably discharged in 1963 and went to work for Tersco, Inc. of West Texas in Lubbock. He moved to Odessa in 1972 and remained with Tersco (later renamed United Refrigeration, Inc.) until his retirement in 2002 when he retired as manager. Paul loved MOJO football and was a member of the Permian Booster Club from 1980 until his death. Because of his loyalty to the football program and booster club, he was awarded the George Manly Special Award, by the Booster Club, on January 24, 2009. In 2000, Paul was diagnosed with Primary Lateral Sclerosis, an upper motor neuron disease in the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis family (Lou Gerhigs disease), a disease mysteriously contracted by more Veterans than any other group of people.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Martha Lucas; children, Robin and Becky Lucas, Ree and Kelli Lucas, Desiree and John Powell, Keliree and Steve Mitchell, Les and Tina Greenlee, Dustin and Shannon Greenlee, Danny and Linda Lucas, 10 grandkids and 3 great grandkids.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons Stephen Mitchell, Gary Lucas, Nathan Mitchell, Donovan Mitchell, Brady Greenlee, Brennan Greenlee, and Lucas Greenlee.
The Lucas Family wishes to extend our sincerest thanks to Hospice of Midland, especially Amanda, Donna and Socorro.
Also, the family would like to give a very special thank you with gratitude from the bottom of our hearts, to his caregiver for the last two years, T'Lah Mitchell, wife of his eldest grandson. T'Lah was there every day, caring for Paul without complaint. Of course, he fired her every day, but she always came back because Paul's orneriness didn't phase her one bit. She always went over and above when caring for Paul. At Christmas, she pushed him around to no less than 18 stores, in one day, so he could do his shopping. On Fridays, she'd get there at 5:30am to take him to the donut shop to see his buddies. During the last two weeks of his life, she was there around the clock. She's the one who would leave at 11:30 at night to go to three 7-11's to find him a coke slushy, only to return home to find him asleep. She would set her alarm and wake up every two hours to turn him. She was his best friend. Her dedication and devotion to him has been a blessing to the family and one that will never be forgotten.
