Mrs. Pearl Lee Collins, 87, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2011 in Odessa, Texas.
Pearl Collins was born August 18, 1923 in Temple, Texas. She came to Odessa in 1937 with parents John and Ida Scott. The Scott family originally lived in a tent on the corner of Tom Green and 16th Street. When Pearls dad found work in the oil fields they were able to buy some land and build a dug out home to live in. Over time the Scott family built their own house one room at a time until they eventually had not only a two bedroom home but a trailer park and several rental properties.
Pearl was a pioneer in many ways but she also decided that she wanted to be a business woman during a time when women usually did not seek to work in the business world. As it turned out she only had one job interview and worked for the same company for fifty six years. In 1942 she applied for a job at Henderson Drug Company, located on the corner of Highway 80 and Grant. Three years later she married the love of her life, Jack Lewis Collins, and together they ran the drug store until August 19, 1998. She eventually became a long time member and president of the American Business Womens Association, ABWA. Pearl and Jack were married for forty nine years. Jack passed away in 1994.
She is survived by children, Bobby Jack, Nancy Ann, and William Tracy. She also leaves behind a brother, John Robert Scott, and his children Terry Scott and Sheila ScottDowlen. There are also eight grand children, Amy, Shanna, Holly, Lona, Toni Jo, Joni, Emily, and Bobby, and six great grand children Anson, Aiden, Bobby, Timothy, Levi, Micah.
Pearl was an active member of the 6th and Jackson Church of Christ and was helping and serving the sick and elderly until the last week of her life. She was an active member of the OHS Class of 1941 and met with them regularly. In her lifetime she saw the Model T and the Space Shuttle, lived through the Great Depression, World War II and the Cold War. She lived a full and happy life with many family and friends.
She was surrounded by family and showered with love as she passed away to rejoin her husband and parents in heaven. She leaves a legacy of love, joy, and happiness. She will be sorely missed.
Services will be held at 6th and Jackson Church of Christ on Wednesday June 1, 2011 at 10:00 AM. There will be a family visitation Tuesday May 31st at the Sunset Funeral Home between 6:00 and 8:00 PM.
