Rebecca Brijalba, age 96, beloved mother, grandmother and friend passed away on July 31, 2020 at 3:16 AM, of natural causes in her sleep in Odessa, Texas surrounded by her family, in the midst of final perseverance prayer.
Rebecca Brijalba was born in Brogado, Texas to Martin and Alejandra Brijalba on April 24, 1924; she had four siblings, two sisters and two brothers. The siblings, Felipe Reyes, Martina Corrales, Dan Brijalba, and Ted Brijalba preceded her in death.
Surviving her are her twins, Sam Brijalba and Sue Brijalba Soza, also residents of Odessa, TX, and her grandson, Frank Chavez, who resides in La Vernia, TX.
Rebecca Brijalba was a transplant from Saragosa, TX; relocating to Odessa when her home was destroyed by a F-5 tornado in 1987. She survived the Great Depression, Typhoid Fever of the 1930’s, the tornado and most recently, Covid-19 pandemic, but sadly she couldn’t outrun Father Time. She had a good run.
Rebecca was a devout Roman Catholic; in her younger days she served on many church-related committees, working closely with the clergy in the community of Saragosa, TX, of which she was a long-time resident. She organized and participated in fund-raisers for the local parish. Her specialty was baking; the parishioners were enamored with her German Chocolate cakes. She was primarily a homemaker but was employed briefly with Balmorhea ISD. She was a dedicated member of the PTA and always volunteered to assist with the general elections in Reeves County. She chose not to be a spectator of her life, but a doer, an active willing participant.
She was also a caregiver; she provided compassionate care to her mother and father until the day they touched the face of God. She was selfless, simple in her ways and modest. She was a kind, humble and virtuous woman with a big heart. She was and still is the epitome of what a mother should be – an epitome of selfless love. She was courageous enough to comfort the world for the sake of her children.
