Roy Chester Gentry, age 70, passed away on Friday, February 1, in Odessa.
He was born to Rev. Willie Gentry and Lillie Gentry on May 18, 1942 in Taylor, Texas. They moved to Odessa, Texas at a very early age. He attended Douglas Elementary school and graduated from Blackshear High School, Odessa College, and U.T.P.B. with a degree in Sociology. He was pastor of Bethel Baptist Church from 1975 until the present. From 1991 until 1996, he worked for Ector County School District as an InSchool Suspension teacher. He served in many capacities with United Way, Head Start, Ector County Advisory Panel, Harmony Home, Crime Stoppers, Globe Theater, Phyllis Wheatley Day Nursery, and many many more.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Willie Gentry and Lillie Gentry, his brother Lester and his son, Chetwin L.
He is survived by his wife, Laura daughters Daphne Gentry, Kesia and husband Steven Gregory, and Regina and husband Jeff Jackson, all of Houston eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren brothers, Robert W. Gentry of Desoto, Texas, Larry and wife Debbie of San Fleipe, Texas, Johnny of Odessa, Charles and Ronnie of Dallas sister, LoEtta of Odessa and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation with the family will be 68 PM Friday, February 8, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for 12:00 Noon Saturday. February 9, 2013 at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. G.T. Curry of Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church of Houston will give the Eulogy and Rev. R.T. McNeil of St. James Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
