Richard Smith, 66 of Midland died Thursday, January 15, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born January 21, 1942 in Spur, Texas to Jack and Jimmie Smith. The family moved to Monahans, Texas in the mid 1940s where he was reared and educated. Richard entered the US Army in January 1959 and was stationed in Southeast Asia and Europe; he was discharged in April 1965. He married Sherry Rains in Monahans January 13, 1966 where they lived until moving to Midland in 1987. Richard worked as a truck driver in the oil industry of West Texas. He was a member of West Kentucky Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the Midland Post of the VFW.

Preceded in death by his parents Jack and Jimmie Smith.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years Sherry of Midland. His sons; Steven Smith and wife Brandi of Midland and Daryl Smith and wife Claudia of Badsageberg, Germany. His grandchildren Kerry Bender and husband Chris of Abilene, Justin Smith, Gage Smith, Hunter Jackson, L.J. Grissom, of Midland, Tiffany Smith, and Julie Smith of Badsageberg, Germany. Great Grandchild Riley Bender of Abilene. Brother; Don Smith and wife Deana of Monahans and sister, Kay Crews and husband Ralph of Monahans, several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 3:00 PM Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at West Kentucky Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Porterfield officiating. Memorials may be directed to the VFW or Home Hospice 901 W. Missouri Ave., Midland, TX 79701
