Sandra Polk

Sandra Challen Martin Polk was born in Falfurrias, Texas, to Al and Betty Martin on August 22, 1946. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Sandra ascended to be with her Lord and Savior, as well as her loved ones who had preceded her, on Sunday September 6, 2009.

Brought up in South Texas where her parents owned and operated Martins Variety Store, a bus station, and Western Union, Sandra attended elementary school in Falfurrias, junior high in Austin, and high school in Big Spring, where her mother taught at Howard College and her dad was in insurance sales. She married after high school and then moved to Odessa in 1965. She then worked as a dietary aide for Odessas Medical Center Hospital for over thirty years.

Sandra is survived by her loving son, Darryl Strohl of Odessa; her sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Don Merriman of Midland; her brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Wendy Martin of Boerne; step sister and brother-in-law, Renee and Terry Witherspoon of Wolfforth and many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her own parents and later by her maternal grandparents Howard and Bessie Atkison of Premont, Texas; her Uncle Marion Atkison of Sulpher Springs; her Uncle Challen Atkison of Premont, Texas. Her paternal grandparents were Robert and Nora Martin of Illinois.

Sandra had a fantastic memory and could quote facts and statistics on many subjects. Among her interests were her large Elvis Presley collection, her love of reading country music magazines, and her enjoyment of puzzle books.

The family wants to especially thank all the staff at Manor Park Health Center for their loving care of Sandra, and we also appreciate the kindness of Comfort Hospice, particularly from Kyle. Prior to her stay at Manor Park, Sandra was given loving in-home care from her friend and neighbor Cyndi Hutchings. She enabled Sandra to stay at home much longer than would otherwise have been possible.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Don Bugg officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Darryl Strohl, Glenn Martin, Nelson Reynes, Kevin Martin, Jon Martin, and Peter Martin.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Odessa Lions Club or the American Cancer Society.
