He was born November 3, 1929 in Morris, Oklahoma to Lola and Columbus Norwood. He was the youngest of thirteen children.
Sherman served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He moved to Odessa in 1953 and married Florence M. Culvahouse on August 26, 1954, after being introduced at church. He was a materials coordinator for Phillips Petroleum for 30 years in the Permian Basin.

You could often find Sherman working in his yard or getting exercise walking in the mall. He was an avid fan of the Oklahoma Sooners and the St. Louis Cardinals.
