Shirley graduated from Texas State College for Women in Denton, now Texas Woman's University. She moved to Odessa upon graduation in 1955 and taught sixth grade at Gale Pond/Alamo Elementary for 38 years in the same classroom. Countless past students over the years have thanked her for being their teacher. Shirley was one of those people who by their participation in activities helps make a town a better place. She was a volunteer with the Auxiliary of Odessa Medical Center "Pink Ladies", a volunteer with the "Juliets" of the Globe Theater and a faithful sister in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Shirley loved to play duplicate bridge, Mexican Train, Chicken Foot and others and always played to WIN. After her husband passed in 1996, she lived her life as a fiercely independent lady to the end. She was a talented poet and wrote countless birthday and special occasion poems to loved ones over the years. Her faith and her church home at Immanuel Baptist were always at the center of her life.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman; her sisters, Wanda Pulliam, Donnie Jo Vest and Becky Shafer and her brother, Bobby Shafer.

She is survived by her daughters, Shari Glass of Odessa and Robyn Miller and husband Brad Miller of Midland; grandsons, Craig Glass and wife Kaylene of San Leandro, CA, Ben Miller and wife Kallie of Houston and Blair Miller of Los Angeles, CA; her sister Ann Pearson of Colleyville; her brothers, William Shafer of Bedford, Ardean Shafer of Keller and Ronnie Shafer of North Carolina; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her special friend, Rayburn Burgess, of Mesquite, who loved her deeply. Her next door angels, Mike and Vicky Dvoracek, were part of Shirley's family and unselfishly provided for her needs for decades.

If desired and in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels of Odessa, Box 15, Odessa, TX 79760 or Immanuel Baptist Church, General Fund.
