Susie Virginia Sue Bradford Norris 88 of Midland died Wednesday, February 25, 2009 in Graham, Texas. She is preceded in death by her husband, Marion Wells Norris and children Virginia Kaye Norris, Robert Norris, Janie Norris Simmonds Also preceded in death by her parents H. Arch Bradford and Nelia J. Bradford and brother Talmadge Bradford.
Born in Winnfield, Louisiana, on April 3, 1920, Sue grew up in Minden, Louisiana. She married Marion Wells Bubba Norris on March 28, 1938. Through Bubbas work with Mobil Oil Company, they lived in many towns throughout west Texas and eastern New Mexico, settling in Odessa and finally Midland. After raising their children, the two enjoyed traveling and especially loved fishing.
A gifted artist, Sues paintings fill the walls of her home. From landscapes covered in Texas bluebonnets to striking floral arrangements, her paintings are cherished by family members and grandchildren. She also was an accomplished seamstress. Through the years, she sewed beautiful clothing for herself, her daughter, Janie, and her grandchildren. Her creations ranged from richly-colored afghans that will be handed down through the generations and everyday potholders that grace kitchens of many. After Bubbas death in 1977, she directed her creative talents to beginning MS Originals, a business specializing in silk floral arrangements. She enjoyed trips to Market in Dallas for shopping as well as creative inspiration. Especially meaningful to her grandchildren and even great grandchildren were the hand-made clown boy dolls that were loved to the point of tatters and the incomparably delicious layered chocolate cake that always was present on visits with Granny.
She is survived by six grandchildren, Jim Norris of Calgary, Canada; Tracey Norris of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Scott Norris of Peralta, New Mexico; Shelley Simmonds Weidenbach of Rockwall, Texas; Carey Simmonds Woodward of Breckenridge, Texas, and J. M. Simmonds IV of Austin, Texas; son-in-law Judge James M. Simmonds; nine great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Bradford Jackson and Dannie Bradford Waters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
