T. J. Smith, 89 of Odessa, passed away at his home on December 29, 2014.
Visitation will be Friday, January 2, 2015 from 4pm to 6pm at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Saturday at 10am at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Channel officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
T. J. was born February 9, 1925 in Regency, TX to the late James M. and Loyce Lee Smith. Evelyn Smith, his stepmother, became his mom when his mother died soon after his birth.
T. J. grew up in Richland Springs, TX and graduated from W. H. Gibbons High School. Upon graduating, T.J. entered the US marines Corps, serving in the Pacific Theater during WWII. After his discharge from the Marines, he began a 35 year career with Western Electric. He retired in 1971.
T. J. married Elma Satterfiend on November 28, 1953 in Pampa, TX. Together, they were involved in an antique car club known as The Oil Burners. They traveled all over the US showing their antique cars. T. J. served as President of The Oil Burners club for several years.
T. J. was also a member of the Bible Baptist church of Odessa.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Elma, 3 sisters and 1 brother.
T. J. is survived by his children, Jay Smith and wife Teressa of Harker Heights, TX and Cherl Maloney and husband Steve of Whitney, TX., 4 grandchildren Shaun Maloney, Lauren Maloney, T. J. Smith and Sheri Noyla, and 5 greatgrandchildren.
