Travis Lewis Red Surratt, age 84, passed away peacefully into Gods care, on Saturday, April 18, 2009, in the presence of family members. Travis died from complications of Alzheimers Disease. He was born in Wolfe City, Texas on January 9, 1925, the youngest of ten children.
Travis enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 15. He served in the Second Infantry Indian Head Division, Company F, during World War II., taking part in the D-Day Invasion June 6, 1944 on Omaha Beach, France. His
ision was in battle all across Europe. He was honorably discharged in San Antonio, Texas, August 10, 1945. He had been awarded the Bronze Star Medal among other distinguished awards.
He began his working career with Phillips Petroleum Company now Conoco-Phillips. During his 40 year tenure with the company he was transferred to many cities in various states in the capacity of supervising construction of building plants, additions, etc. and the largest project of laying pipe beneath the North Sea. He was sent to England during that time, and sent back to the states earlier than planned because of death in the family. He continued with Phillips until retirement.
He is survived by his daughter Laura Jeanne Surratt Joiner of Arlington, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Ohin Surratt; seven brothers, Hardy, Guy, Ray, J.D., Homer, Joe, and O.C. Surratt; two sisters, Merkle and Nadine; and son Travis Luther Surratt on January 31, 2005.
Other survivors include nieces, Elizabeth Boynton, Norma Ashcraft, Betty Weaver, Erline Scroggins, Helen Robinson, and Caroline Low; nephews, Charles Parish, Jerry Surratt, Mickey Surratt, and Harry Surratt.
Graveside services will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 2:00 PM with Larry Hood officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by VFW Troop 4372.
