Velma was born to Howard and Neoma Flack in Graham, Texas on May 6, 1929. She along with her parents and two sisters, Grace and Kathryn, and her young brother Charles moved to Odessa in 1937 from the small oil town of Bunger, Texas where the three girls rode a horse to their one room school house. She continued her education in Odessa going to elementary, junior high and finally Odessa High School.

She met and married the love of her life, Roy Andrew (Tunny) McClung in Odessa. She said she first noticed him because he drove a convertible with foxtails hanging from twin antennas. They were married on November 26, 1946, in Odessa. She worked as a hairdresser in her own beauty shop located at their family home. She did this so she could set her own hours allowing her to be more involved in her children’s school environment and activities. In her younger days, she sponsored several bowling and volleyball teams and was also a participant on those teams. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church when it was located on Odessa’s south side and eventually moved with it to its present location and then in 1969, she moved her membership to Central Baptist Church and became a proud charter member.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Howard Flack and Neoma (Big Mama) Hall, her sisters Grace Beavers and Kathryn Edwards and her brother Charles Flack, along with her husband Tunny McClung.

Velma is survived by daughter Patsy (McClung) Lay of Odessa, son Donald Roy McClung and wife, Kim, of Odessa, her five grandsons, Landon Lay and wife Sarah of Weatherford, Texas, Logan Lay and wife, Melanie, of Lubbock, Texas, Lindsey Lay and fiancé, Steely White, also of Lubbock, Dylan Roy McClung and wife, Aspen, of Odessa and Derek Reid McClung and wife Ashley, also of Odessa, Texas, seven great granddaughters and four great grandsons, one sister-in-law, Darlene Flack of Houston, Texas, along with numerous nieces and nephews, and half brothers and sisters in the Illinois area.
