On April 24, 2016 Vickie VanJelgerhuis, 60, passed away while in the presence of loved ones. She died as she had lived, with great dignity, at peace and full of love. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the love and prayers of family, friends, and many supporters carried her through the last few weeks of her life.
Vickie was born in Odessa, Texas to Bernice McMinn and Roy Atkinson on August 8, 1955. She went to school at Odessa High. Her earlier years were spent working at Walmart, then later in life she picked up the hobby of bowling, where she found and married the love of her life Donald VanJelgerhuis on May 10, 1984 in Odessa.
Throughout her life, she was known for her loving and caring nature to anyone she knew. Filled with compassion and interest in others, Vickie made friends easily. She was an avid bingo player, reader, reality TV show junkie, wahoo master, and shop ‘til you drop partner. She loved the Beatles, board/card games, telling stories of her youth, and being an active mother in every moment of her children's lives. She lent an ear when in need, advice when struggling, and an open heart when love was essential. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling, laughter, and joking around will never be forgotten.
She is preceded in death by her Father, Roy Alvin Atkinson and Brother, Roy Allan Atkinson.
Her surviving family members are numerous, but mainly include Husband, Donald VanJelgerhuis; son, Jason Brinlee & Partner Jeremy Paulsen; daughter, Lindy Lomax & Son in Law Doug Lomax; grandchildren, Dayton & Emily Brinlee; mother & stepfather, Bernice & Jim McMinn; sister, Deborah Atkinson; sister in law, Liz Atkinson. Fortunately, there are too many beloved nieces and nephews to count, but have not been forgotten.
Funeral Services will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home in Odessa on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 4:00 pm. Burial will follow.
Pallbearers will be Jason Brinlee, Brad Dunham, Quentin Atkinson, Quest Atkinson, Doug Lomax & Jeremy Paulsen.
The Family is abundantly thankful for the outpouring of prayers and support from Family and Friends. That appreciation also includes the friendly staff at Midland Memorial West Campus as well as others involved.
Vickie always lived by the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you would like to be treated. Take the time to do a loving act of kindness, make someone laugh, send a card, give a hug, or say, "I love you" to someone dear in her memory.
