Viona Green

December 23, 1911 — April 1, 2009

ODESSA: Viona Inez Green passed away quietly in the presence of loving family members in the early afternoon of Friday, April 1st, 2009. She was 97 years old. Viona was a devoted homemaker and business woman who managed several properties and other commercial interests along with her husband, L. D. Bill Green since the late 1940s.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father as well as her husband, Bill Green, and her two sisters, Ileta Meek and Lucille Hiltbrunner.

She was born in Wheeler County on a farm near Shamrock, Texas on December 23rd, 1911 to Arthur and Maude Grant. She completed high school and business school before her marriage to Bill Green on May 14th, 1933. They lived in various parts of the South and Southwest United States before finally settling in Odessa in October, 1944. She and Bill raised four children while building their lives in and around Ector County. She particularly enjoyed her cousins family reunions, trips at home and abroad in conjunction with her husbands membership in the Odessa Chuck Wagon Gang and her participation in various community clubs such as the Ladies Oriental Shrine and the Christian Womens Fellowship.

She is survived by her daughter Wilona Dyson and husband Kenneth of Spring, Texas, son Arthur and wife DAnn of Odessa, daughter Glendya Williams and husband Lester of Odessa and daughter Detra Swenson and husband Jim of Vancouver, Washington. She has 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Viona was a blessing and an inspirational figure in the lives of her family from the oldest child to the youngest of the off-spring. She remembered every birthday and any other important event in all of their lives. She was never judgmental. Her love was unconditional and her compassion was always present in her relations with others. Historic family gatherings on December 23rd each year to celebrate both her birthday and Christmas will never be the same. Mamaw will be greatly missed. Her adoring family wishes her happiness in her new place in Heaven.

A Memorial service for friends and family will be conducted on Saturday April 4th at 1:30 p.m. by Reverend Steve Digby at Vionas beloved First Christian Church of Odessa where she was a faithful member since 1944. The family will meet and receive visitors at the Sunset Memorial Funeral Home on Friday, April 3rd from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Viona requested that donations be given to the Odessa College Foundation, 201 West University, Odessa, TX 79764 in lieu of flowers.
