Wayne Matney, 86, of Odessa, passed away at his home on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 after a lengthy illness. Wayne was born on June 29, 1927 in Charlie, Texas, a twin and one of five sons born to T.B. and Ollie Matney.
Although he was from a farming family, you could not keep him down on the farm and he moved to Dallas in 1943 where he sold mens shoes. His brother Earl brought him out to Lubbock in 1944 to work at Margos selling womens shoes and a true salesman was born. He moved to Midland in 1946 to work for Larsens and eventually moved to Odessa. In 1955 he started out on his own by signing on with the Wohl Shoe Company and opening the shoe department in the Jo Ann Shop . In the late 50s he and his twin brother Warren opened shoe stores in the Yaring stores in Austin, Texas. He sold out his interest in the Austin stores in 1961. Throughout the next decade he would open several stores including the Shoe Box in Odessa, Barrys in Temple and Killeen and another joint venture with his older brother Earl in the Grammar Murphy store in Midland. He retired and sold out his business in 1988.
He was an active member of Highland United Methodist Church, the Odessa Downtowns Lions Club and several old car organizations.
Wayne never met a stranger and loved being in the retail business. It was a family joke that he might not remember your name, but he could look at your feet and tell you what size shoe you wore and where you bought the pair you were wearing.
Wayne met his beloved wife Doris Ethridge and they married in1949. She preceded him in death in 2006. He is also preceded in death by his parents T.B. and Ollie, his oldest brother Leslie and wife Lettie, brother Earl and wife Billye, brother Ray and wife Zerne.
Wayne is survived by his daughters Connie Martin of Abilene and Sandra Matney of Kingsland his twin Warren and wife Malda and numerous nieces and nephews.
The familys gratitude is extended to the Angels who have loved and cared for him Susie Martinez and Helen Jimenez.
In lieu of flowers, family request donations to the Highland United Methodist Church or a favorite charity.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning at 10:00a.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home with the Reverend Donita Lea officiating.
