William “Bill” Robert Massey “Masco” was born to William Clarence Massey and Laura Augusta Massey in Laurel, Mississippi on April 22nd, 1941. He went to heaven on January 21st, 2025. He was always a hardworking man. When his family moved to Anthony, NM while he was still in high school, he was responsible for the closing shift at the local gas station. Later his family moved to Odessa, in time for him to graduate from OHS in 1959.
Bill started his career in Odessa by working for Furr’s supermarket while still in high school. He worked for Furr’s for 12 years, advancing to store manager by age 23. In 1974 Bill married Nancy Sonnenberg. With a desire to change careers, Bill was able to purchase LSI in 1978 and M&L Valve Service Inc. in 1988. Later Bill and Nancy decided to give the restaurant business a try. The first Rosa’s Cafe & Tortilla Factory opened in Odessa on 8th St. in 1985. After Rosa’s was sold to Bobby Cox, in the following years Bill missed the restaurant business, therefore he purchased the Barn Door and South Forty Catering in 1994. The sum of Bill’s business career led him to be honored with the Small Businessperson of The Year in 1995.
On a different note, in his spare time he loved to fish with his buddies in Mexico. He also golfed on a regular basis, often scoring in the low 70’s. His greatest joy was playing gin. He could brag that he and Tim Peden won the Glen Hunt annual Gin Tournament two years in a row (2022 and 2023). He also enjoyed giving back to the community by serving on many boards and committees. His philanthropic attitude led him to be a part of The De Tocqueville society of United Way.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents and sons, B D and Bobby Massey. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; and his sister, Sheri Fletcher. He was “Papaw” to his granddaughters, Megan Vaughan and husband Bubba, Michelle Stum and husband Dustin, Lauren Arrington and husband Carson; and grandson, Robby Massey and fiancé, Gabriella Salazar. He also adored his four great-grandchildren, Grayson, Evan, Jaxon, and Walker.
