Wilma P. Jones
September 5, 1921 - March 30, 2018
On Friday, March 30, 2018, our Lord called Wilma Pinner Jones home to eternal rest.
Born in 1921, in Bowman, Arkansas, Wilma was one of the five children of
Clyde and Gertrude Pinner. Wilma lived in Wink, Texas as a young child and,
in 1929, moved with her family to Odessa, Texas. Wilma graduated from
Odessa High School in 1939. She married the love of her life, William
Donald Jones, in 1944, and shortly afterwards they moved to an irrigated
cotton farm west of McCamey, Texas. After 15 years of farm life, Wilma and
Donald happily settled in the Hill Country of Sonora, Texas. When her
husband died she moved to Odessa for 8 years. She spent her remaining years
of her life in Houston, Texas.
Wilma's life was centered on her family, and she inspired them in many ways.
She was an excellent cook, seamstress, gardener and tennis player. She was a
devoted wife and most who knew her would say that she was "prim and proper
"at all times. She loved playing bridge and won many bridge tournaments.
Wilma was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sonora and maintained her
membership there for many years after moving away since it was with her
husband, Donald.
She showed great strength of character throughout her life, possibly due to
being a child of the Great Depression and growing up in an environment of
scarcity and hardship.
Wilma was a valued, long-time employee of the Web Elliott insurance company
of Sonora, eventually retiring with her husband when he finished his career
at the Texas Highway Department.
Wilma is survived by her son and daughter, Gary E. Jones of Cypress, Texas
and Trudy J. Driskell of Houston, Texas, as well as her four
grandchildren--Marci Jones Chapman, Scott Schreiber, Tracey Shuey, and
Kristin Roberts-and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by
her parents; her three brothers, Cleamon Pinner, Virgil Pinner and J. D.
Pinner; her sister, Evelyn Cherry; and her husband of 52 years, William
Donald Jones.
A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Garden on Tuesday,
April 3, 2018, at 1:00 pm, where Wilma will be laid to rest beside her beloved
husband. Reverend Karen Murphy of University Baptist Church, Houston, TX, officiating.
Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home. To send family condolences please sign her guestbook at www.sunsetodessa.com.
